Graduated

Joshura - Posted on 01 June 2010

Hey everyone. It's been a while, if I haven't spoken to you recently. If I have, then I guess it hasn't been a while. Sorry to lie like that, then.

I just graduated. From college. I am really proud of myself. I have come to realize that this is an extremely important year in my life, and the things I do now will shape the entire direction of my life. And so far, I've been wasting time at my mom's apartment, doing absolutely nothing worthwhile. Before I continue, those nothing things are:

"Doctor Who" - Season 5 started a little while ago, and it's been interesting, at least. The new companion is the best of the series, and the new Doctor is pretty fun, just not entirely the Doctor I'd like. Some shit just went down that has my mind blown still.

"Big Bang Theory" - Just had its 3rd season finale. This show actually came to my attention before I graduated, and I watched all of it then. It is also dumb, but still amusing. Worth a shot. It's rare that a show has so many good characters. Now, if only the plot was as good...

"My Name is Earl" - All four seasons of this show are on Netflix Instant Watch. It is not particularly spectacular, but it is amusing. The first two seasons are the best. I'm a little surprised it got canceled, as I've seen worse shows go longer.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Bought this the other day, wanting to play a game, but not wanting to approach Mass Effect again for the hundredth time (I'll get back to it later). Once I complete the game, I'll post a review, but I can say now that it has been amazing. People say that it's really just Galaxy again, as though Galaxy were made into a longer game. It's kind of true, in a way, except you would also need to imagine that Galaxy never existed, then this game came out. Of course, it did, so every little problem is smoothed over, and made awesome. I'm not actually in love with the game. But, with Mario games, I get in this mood to collect every little item, and can't stop until I do, and this game is making that quite fun. Better than the first one, for sure.

"Invader Zim" - The first season is on Netflix. It's not as funny as I remember.

"The World's Fastest Indian" - Just watched this movie last night on Instant Watch, and I absolutely loved it. Anthony Hopkins is one of the greats, but it seems like his skill is put to waste so often (Bad Company, Zorro, etc.). In this surprisingly low-budget indie film, you see him at his best. The story is uplifting, and provides many moments for our dear actor to pull you through a full spectrum of emotions. There is tangible fear for the man's safety and true happiness for his success. So good.

Scott Pilgrim - There's a movie coming this August starring Michael Cera called "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." For me, the trailer was out of nowhere, shown before Iron Man 2 (which was also quite good), and seemed like another stupid Michael Cera as Michael Cera movie. The friend I saw Iron Man 2 with quickly informed me that the movie was based on a recent comic series. On his recommendation, I just started reading it, and boy, is it awesome. I read through the first volume dubiously after being hooked by just the preview on the site, then ordered every volume in the series from Amazon. I'll probably give it a full article sometime soon - once I read the rest.

So that's the random media I've been enjoying. Read on for more about my -life-.

I bought myself a Japanese padfolio recently. Padfolios are typically just these binders with legal pads in them, meant to make plain sheets of paper look nice in an office setting, and perhaps to keep pages dry or whatever. This thing I got is meant to protect/spiffy up notebooks printed on Japanese paper sizes (B4, B5). Japanese notebooks are amazing because they're so thin, they just feel... more portable. Of course, a padfolio detracts from that portability, but it also contributes purported importance. Things in a binder that spiffy must be important, of course! I plan on using the binder to keep things together, and since the notebooks are so small, I'm trying to build a stock of them, so I'll never run out of paper.

The reason I described this new notebook retainment device, hereafter known simply as a notebook, IS this: I want to write things down. Ohohoho! My goodness! I am a modern intellectual leader. A computer isn't always there for me to type in my thoughts, nor would a smartphone allow me to draw or chart ideas.

The notebook is really meant for a life I'm hoping to start soon in a working environment. In the world of careers and paychecks, notebooks are far less threatening as tools of distraction as computers are. With a nice, professional, portable notebook, I can enjoy my thoughts and fantasy worlds without arousing suspicions!

I am currently looking at jobs in the DC area that will give me a source of income while I wait for opportunities in Japan to crystallize. Some such DC jobs include: pedicab, temp worker, fry cook. That's it. Whatever I may end up with, I hope I can get lots of new ideas and thoughts to write into my fancy notebook.

In Japan! I don't know what I will be doing there yet, but I know I want to become truly fluent in Japanese. I'm looking at any and all jobs that will get me a work visa and keep me there for 1-2 years. Hopefully, opportunities will arise from there.

AND THEN, there's Koholint. I need to firm up a job, or at least apply to a lot of them, then I need to... do nothing else, actually. I just need to apply for jobs. After that, I will be putting my energy into making this site the community it should be. First, I'll take care of some of the visual problems listed in the roadmap. Then, I'll fix the chat (replace it with something better). THEN! I will set up the FFXIV part of the site, where we can hotly anticipate the upcoming MMORPG. Then, other things on the roadmap will happen in time. From here on out, I intend to update more regularly - slowly at first, but in time, daily.

I found a bunch of comic mock-ups while cleaning out my room. They're really funny, so I'll probably finish those and post them soon!

And that's all I have to say for now!

I know I've said this before but congrats!

And boy does it sound like you've the "whole lot of nothing" well covered! :)

I just have to snicker at you about the notebook...I hate to tell you but it's sooo, not an original idea. Most people I've seen with anything similar tend to be doing exactly what you plan to do with yours, and trust me I've spent enough time as a meeting recorder to have seen plenty of people do just that. Oh well, it's a good practice though. I personally keep a few bound notebooks with unruled paper for working on my stories and their associated outlines, character/costume/etc. sketches, timelines, etc. so I can appreciate the concept.

Oh, and good luck on the job search!

Congratulations Josh! I do hope everything works out for you. Have you tried the JET program? You could teach English over there in Japan? I have several friends doing that right now. They love it. You just don't get to choose where you want to go. But who cares, it's Japan!! Be happy you don't live in California, it's getting a little better, but jobs are hard to come by here. Thank goodness people like to do parties (costume parties) or I'd be outta work haha! Anyway I do wish you the best of luck! Just remember to be patient and don't get too frustrated. Life snags sometimes, sew it up and get back on track. ^.^b

Yeah, I know JET. It's a lot more competitive than what I'm currently applying to, but if I don't get anything this Fall, I will apply to JET. Which is annoying, because I think I need recommendations from teachers...

You do costuming? I didn't actually know that. I'm making costumes for cosplay! Right now, I'm working on Commander Shepard's suit jacket.

Yes I love making costumes! Ive never made anything for a male body. I mostly make period costumes or costumes from movies for people. I make gothic, neo-victorian, steampunk, some anime cosplay, kimonos, etc. I'm currently working on my own costume, I'm going to a Masquerade in July, so I really need to pick up the pace lol!

Nothing about that seemed funny to me at all.

Anyways, hope you get your stuff in order. Will you be working in DC or around DC?

don't know about DC yet.

That clip is rather interesting. If you don't know the show, it sucks. If you do know the show, it's awesome. The problem/good thing about BBT is that it's entirely carried by its characters. The plots suck, and the jokes are kind of flat. But, the characters are amazing. Once you've seen enough episodes to get to know the characters a bit, everything becomes happy and funny. Scenes like that where Sheldon describes playing Mario 64 in such detail is really delightful, since he's awesome.

It all sounds good Josh, I've also recently graduated, and you helped me a lot at times when I was going through school. It's good to see you have lots of goals, and it isn't gonna be easy to achieve them. You work hard though, or at least you understand the value of it :p

I also saw the trailer "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World." on the 360, at first I scoffed at what i was seeing, but there was something more to it, lots of stuff going on! It looked fun.

I support Koholint, and I'm also in my own life settling phase, I would like to support everything that is important to me, including the site. I must first manage my crap though... I will add I have been listening to a lot of my favorite radio programs, and am thinking of purchasing an XM transceiver and XM subscription. I find a large portion of my distractions are eliminated, when I am entertained by ear, rather than by eyes. Maybe It will help, I kick back, read/draw without TV/youtube, I merely listen to Opie and Anthony(favorite program) or some music =]

Good to hear from ya and know what's going on with you dude, goodluck sir.
