XIV Open Beta coming soon

I was getting excited about this, then my new computer stopped working! Will you be playing the beta, Bapidai?

I'm really thinking about it. One one hand, I would love to jump into the game and see what's going on, understand a little about the mechanics, try random things, hear the music, go battle... all the things that I'm curious about!

On the other hand, I think that might make me enjoy the final product less because: 1) There's no guarantee that what's in the beta will be in the final product, and 2) With all the negative comments about the beta, I don't really know if I want to see the current development stage or not. I realize that eventually the latter will come to pass since, I suppose, development stages are a constant part of life in an MMORPG, but I may want to wait for a more polished product. I was on Eorzeapedia and found a thread about the development progress of XI, and man was that messy! The JP had a lot to deal with while the bugs were fixed and the mechanics were altered. I assume that we will face a similar situation when XIV comes out. A game whose release date gets pushed forward by six months is sure to have its fair share of bugs and problems.

Besides the above, there's no guarantee I'll get into the beta anyways. From the wording of the email I received, it seems like as long as you have a Square Enix account you'll be able to get a beta code... but I don't really believe that's what they intended. I suppose I'll just have to find out when I apply.

tl;dr - Have reasons to play and not to play, but why not? If it will be messy at release, no reason to deny myself a sneak peak. Besides, that gives me time to cancel my pre-order if I feel it is made of fail.

I downloaded the client a while ago. Gonna see how well the game runs on my computer. Did we ever decide on a server?

I have been playing on Wutai for two days now.

A concern with the server becoming overcrowded
and infantile based on the name-recognition
attracting the simpler element has arose...

I imagine this may very well be an issue.

Yeah, I personally have a boner for FFV, since it's the only one I ever actually beat. Istory is also a cool name, so we can say "istorian," which... is neat.

I don't really care, but if a server were to be randomly selected, I would avoid Wutai and Selbina for concern of overcrowding. I have heard that Besaid was claimed as an RP server, so if a major has a boner for RP, we might consider that.

I just now got into the beta. Unfortunately, it seems I have a bunch of updates to download, so I don't imagine I'll be playing anytime soon... its all up to how lucky I get with the update client.

I personally won't get to play the open beta for a few weeks, since my computer is out for repairs. I might try to install on my MBP, because it would be cool if that worked at all.

Josh, Militia in the BG oekaki said that she will probably be playing on whatever server her guild is going to join, and it's seeming like it's going to be Figaro at this point. Might be something to consider.

FFXII has been my favorite Final Fantasy so far, so I'd choose Rabanastre if I had a choice in names. Don't listen to me though, I haven't figured out if I'm going to be playing yet.
