Choices! What games do you choose?
We all know that during the year, the different seasons bring tons of new games to the shelves. There are few among us who are lucky enough to be able to afford as many games as they want, but what about everyone else? With so many games coming out, how do we decide which ones we buy and which ones we just pass on? Is pirating an acceptable alternative if you just cant afford it? Most of us have school to go through and probably not the most well paying jobs (I'm a deli clerk).
When I buy a game, I typically choose based on familiarity. I play way too many sequels, but that's how I like it. But even I have to branch out and try new games, always with exciting results. My favorite most recent game which stands alone has to be Demons Souls. When I'm not sobbing into my palm with frustration playing the game, I find myself being extremely satisfied with the gameplay, story and art direction.
How do you decide? Do you pick and choose which you purchase or can you deal with torrenting it online? With so many games coming out this spring/summer like several years past, can you live with skipping a few or do you have to get your hands on as many as possible?

Yes,downloading games is pretty bad. I've more or less stopped downloading things all together. The exception being games/movies i've bought in the past and lost, and some music every now and again.
I just gave up piracy... for the most part. I've slid back on my decision in the case of things not easily available, or things that I just want to try out.
It's really hard to do this.
i only pirate older games like game boy and game boy color...mostly cuz there are some games that werent released in the US or are impossible to get ahold of. course i havnt played them in YEARS...no playstation games or anything though.
if i cant afford a game i just try to ignore it and everything else until i get ahold of money *cough*until my mom buys it for me*cough*
I agree, but I'm poor as fuck and can't afford any games what so ever :p So I compromise - I download games, then if I like them I scrape together enough money to buy it ^^;
...speaking of, is there no way to remove comments? '-'
normal users can't usually remove their own comments, or are you too used to being SUPERADMIN?
Or, do I remember that incorrectly?
no i'm quite sure users could remove posts on vp o.o
Spore was downloaded 1,700,000 million times illegally.
Doubt that very muchly. ;D

They could not.
And ontopic:
Buy for PS3.
And tomorrow I'm going to buy my first game for PC in 7 years, StarCraft II.
I'm kinda proud of myself... both for buying SC2.. and having survived on my PS3 and a few downloaded PC-games for so long ^^
Srsly.. I own 2 games for PC.. and one of them I haven't seen since a friend borrowed it 3 years ago.
Doubt that very muchly. ;D
Well, that's what the article said :P
Also, congrats on minimizing your piracy!

I dont think you could. But I didnt know you could change the title of a thread by changing the subject field in the first post.
I can believe spore was downloaded that much pretty easily. When I downloaded it there was some ridiculous number of seeders and leechers.
I'm a pirate ARRRRR
bout games though.. I choose whatever looks interesting. And then I DL it :P
When I was younger I would just randomly buy PS1 games =)
I'm also a pirate, mainly because I don't really play the "normal" games that actually gets released here in sweden lol
as for game choices, not that I really do any of those, but when i do, it's mostly based on how the game looks (that would say story, overall looks, gameplay etc), and sometimes what gamereviews says. Something like that *nod nod*
also; my bro usually buys the stuff he wish to support~ which is all good~
Spore was downloaded 1,700,000 million times illegally.
That is 1.700.000.000.000 that's like everyone who has internet downloaded it 1000 times...
ahahahahaha, i see what you did there.
I suppose that's quite a miswording.
1,700,000 times is still quite a lot.

WELL. Let's see, here.
The conundrum.
Here's a funny little article: http://torrentfreak.com/top-10-most-pirated-games-of-2008-081204/
Spore was downloaded 1,700,000 million times illegally. The game did all right on its own, but imagine, that many people have it now that could have otherwise spent $50 on it. At least people are playing it, right? I'm not going to start preaching about this shit, either, because I'm not exactly a clean kettle.
Piracy's not a good thing. In fact, it's pretty bad. I strongly urge anyone who likes a game, especially from a small or new developer, to buy it. Buy DLC, tell your friends, etc. Your purchase directly affects the proliferation of that game. Sequels, franchising, faster releases, more games like it... only good things can come from buying a game. It's kind of like voting. Sure, your one vote may not turn the tide of an election, but someone has to vote, or we end up with shit.
That said, pirating games is a really bad habit of mine. I've effectively stopped, but I still have games on my computer that I didn't buy.
The real problem with this situation is: you need to work to buy games, but then if you're working all the time, you don't have time to play them. There's so many games coming out worth playing that it's harder than ever to find a balance between the amount of time we spend working and playing. The best we can really do is buy the games we know will be worth our time.
When will developers learn to give us a break between big releases?
